Analysis of the Functional Components and Various Biological Activities of Korean Medicinal Herbs

Abstract
This study prepared the methanol extracts from 11 different kinds of Korean medicinal herbs and analyzed their functional components and various biological activities including anti-oxidation, anti-diabetes and anti-high blood pressure activities. The total polyphenol contents were higher in the order of Lespedeza cuneata (102.7 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g), Eleutherococcus senticosus (98.0 mg GAE/g), and Houttuynia cordata (66.1 mg GAE/g). The total flavonoid contents were higher in the order of L. cuneata (62.8 mg quercetin equivalents (QE)/g), H. cordata (23.6 mg QE/g), and E. senticosus (16.6 mg QE/g). The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2¡¯-azino-bis(3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging activities were higher in the order of E. senticosus (87.9% and 90.9%, respectively), H. cordata (83.1% and 87.9%, respectively), and L. cuneata (79.3% and 85.8%, respectively). The results of ferrous reducing antioxidative power assay were higher in the order of L. cuneata (169.5 mg Trolox equivalents (TE)/g), E. senticosus (165.5 mg TE/g), and Kalopanax pictus (62.4 mg TE/g). The results of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition assay were higher in the order of Lycium chinense (19.2%), K. pictus (16.8%), and L. cuneata (13.5%). The results of ¥á-glucosidase inhibition assay were higher in the order of L. cuneata (93.7%), Cornus officinalis (50.9%), and Cnidium officinale (28.9%). Overall, these results will help to analyze functional components and to investigate various biological effects of these traditional Korean medicinal herbs.
